United States, December 10:
United States President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American lawyer Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. The announcement was made by Trump on the Truth Social platform on Monday.
“I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice,” Trump said in his post.
Trump praised Dhillon for his long career in defending civil liberties, and said, “Throughout his career, Harmeet has consistently stood up to protect our valuable civil rights, including fighting against censorship of our freedom of speech from big tech companies, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID, and suing companies that use ‘woke’ policies to discriminate against their employees.”
Dhillon, one of America's leading election lawyers, has worked to ensure that only valid votes are counted. She received her degrees from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School and served as a clerk on the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
"Harmeet is a respected member of the Sikh religious community. In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will serve as a fearless defender of our Constitutional rights, and will fairly and firmly enforce our civil rights and election laws," the president-elect said.
Born in Chandigarh, Dhillon, 54, moved to the US as a child with her parents. In 2016, she made history by becoming the first Indian-American to speak at the GOP convention in Cleveland.
